Lights for Life was introduced almost 30 years ago by the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation as a way to combine the spirit of the holidays with Ashland’s extraordinary sense of community. Over the years, it has become a cherished tradition of remembrance, love and gratitude. Lights for Life contributions can honor and thank someone special in your life, they can reach out to someone who has suffered a loss, or they can highlight a joyful occasion in traditional or creative ways: Commemorating the birth of a child or grandchild. Remembering the loss of a loved one or pet. Honoring your parent, spouse or partner. Celebrating a birthday, anniversary, wedding or retirement. Thanking a local customer, service provider or caregiver Gifts to Lights for Life benefit the work of Asante Ashland Community Hospital, and donations are symbolized by lights on two holiday trees, one on Siskiyou Boulevard near Ashland Public Library, and one in Talent near the Town Hall. The trees go up just before Thanksgiving and stay lit until after the New Year. There is also a Lights for Life display in the West Lobby of Asante Ashland during the month of December, where visitors can see the names of those honored or remembered during the holiday season. Another hallmark of Lights for Life are recognition ads placed in local publications that list the donors and their honorees, unless they choose to give anonymously. Janet Troy, executive director of the Ashland Community Hospital Foundation, remarked, “We receive many comments each year from supporters about how they look forward to the ads and enjoy reading the names of those being recognized during the holidays. It’s a great way to reflect and give thanks.” There is clear loyalty among supporters in the Ashland and Talent communities for Lights for Life. “Every year we see many repeat contributors who are lighting a light for someone special,” Troy says. “Some people like to honor or remember the same person year after year, while others like to choose someone new each time. If a donor requests it, we send a holiday acknowledgement card to the honoree or person they designate, letting them know about the donation. It’s very touching to be a part of their holiday traditions.” Lights for Life also plays an important role in the work Asante Ashland Community Hospital. Each year it raises about $60,000 to support hospital services.. This year contributions will be used to support women’s health services and a new urology program. “Of course, donors always have the option to choose the program or service most meaningful to them,” Troy says. In this season of giving, the foundation hopes you will remember friends and loved ones through a tax-deductible contribution to Lights for Life. Gifts stay within the community and directly support the work of Asante Ashland. To learn more or to donate, please go to achfoundation.org or call 541-201-4015.
