"People can make their own smoothies using pedal power," said Lexi Delgado, coordinator of the 15th annual Bike Swap to be held this Saturday at 1175 E. Main St., in the parking lot between the Ashland Civic Center and The Grove. The drop-off time for used bikes and equipment is from 7 to 11 a.m. There is a $5 registration fee for the first item and a $2 fee for each additional item. Along with the fees, up to 10 percent of the sale price of each item will be retained for bicycle safety programs. The full 10 percent will be retained for the most costly items. "This is a fundraiser for bicycle safety education programs in Ashland. We're raising money to make sure kids do ride bikes and, most importantly, they ride safely," Delgado said. People can buy bikes and equipment from noon until 4 p.m. The entry fee into the Bike Swap is $2 per person or $5 per family, and includes a raffle ticket for bikes and other equipment that will be awarded at a 3 p.m. drawing. Anybody who dropped off an item and paid the registration fee will receive free admittance. Delgado said the Bike Swap is the ideal place for people to upgrade their bicycle or find bicycles for all members of the family. "It's a really, really good place if you have children. Children grow out of bikes so quickly," she said. Representatives from local bike shops will display new products and, along with biking experts, will answer questions throughout the day. At 1 p.m., families are invited to bring their own bikes and helmets to participate in a safety lesson and ride. Local cyclist Dave Nourie will perform stunts at 2 p.m. Clinics on bike safety, how to change a tire and other topics will be held throughout the afternoon. People who dropped off bikes and equipment should return to the Bike Swap between 4 and 6 p.m. to find out if their items sold. The Ashland Parks and Recreation Department, which teamed with Bike Swap coordinators this year, will issue checks for sold items within three weeks. Unsold items can be picked up, and unsold children's bikes can be donated to help create a fleet for safety education programs. During the morning drop-off hours, people also can donate bikes in good condition to the Bike Swap for sale. The safety programs will be scheduled this summer, with the number of events to be determined by proceeds from the Bike Swap, according to Ashland Parks and Recreation Department Director Don Robertson.
