Foster The two-time defending league champion Raiders (24-15, 9-4 CC) improved to 18-1 against the Cavaliers (15-22, 3-12) since 2002 and extended their overall win streak to seven thanks to a seven-hitter by senior ace Miranda Gillaspie and junior reliever Julianne Cree in Game 1 and a one-hit, complete-game by freshman Alicia Caudill in Game 2. Southern mustered only two hits in Game 1 against Cav sophomore hurler Annele Huckins, but the Raiders loaded the bases with no outs in the second on a Tanisha Burch double, a Carla Lillis walk and a CU fielding error. Burch scored on a fielding error by right fielder Raynelle Kurtz, and Kim Kraxberger followed with a sacrifice fly to score Lillis. Gillaspie (13-5), who allowed four hits in five innings to earn her seventh straight win, stranded Cavs on first and second in the fourth and fifth frames, and Cree picked up her fourth save by wiggling out of another CU first-and-second, one-out situation in the sixth and by posting two innings of relief. Huckins dropped to 8-10 despite allowing no earned runs and whiffing four Raiders. Southern’s offense came alive in Game 2 when it battered Cav starter Kristin Donahue (3-7) for six runs (four earned) on six hits in just 2 1-3 innings. The four-run second inning featured a Burch RBI triple and run-scoring singles by Lillis and Megan Rock coupled with two CU errors, and Leann Foster smacked her second home run of the season in the two-run third stanza against reliever Taryn Scott. Foster, who went 2-for-3, collected two more RBIs with a fourth-inning double, which triggered the eight-run rule when Caudill (5-4) thwarted the Cavs in the top of the fifth. Donahue collected CU’s lone hit against Caudill with two outs in the first, and she finished the doubleheader by accounting for three of the team’s eight singles. Burch finished with a 2-for-3 batting line in the twinbill, while Williams went 3-for-6. Southern returns to action Wednesday with a nonleague doubleheader at Northwest Christian prior to home weekend tilts against loop rivals Albertson (Friday) and Eastern Oregon (Saturday). Track and Field At Davis, Calif., the Southern Oregon University men’s track and field team received a memorable 800-meter performance and a slew of second-place finishes at the big UC Davis Woody Wilson Relays on Saturday. Junior Trevor Palmer became the sixth Raider male student-athlete to surpass an NAIA meet automatic qualifying standard this season with a personal-best 1:51.64 in the 800. The school’s second-fastest mark ever in the event and best since 1992 allowed the Crater High product and Raider all-star distance runner to finish as the top collegiate runner (and second overall) in the 26-racer field. Senior All-American Nick Hanson collected a pair of second-place finishes with a 46-2 3/4 in the triple jump and with a 6-6 in the high jump. Freshman pole vaulter Ryan Musselman cleared a personal-best 15-5 3/4 and tied teammate Robbie Johnston for second in the aerial event. Freshman Jasen Hartford placed third in the 200 (22.36) and was seventh in the 100 (11.03); senior Travis Floeck finished in the No. 7 spot with a career-best 1:54.40 in the 800; and senior Sean Peterson became the first Raider to post a sub-four minute 1500 time this season (3:59.45, ninth place). The Raider men’s 4x400 relay team shaved four seconds off its previous top 2005 time with a 3:22.96. On the women’s side, sophomore Emily Dunn of Medford collected season-bests of 12.87 in the 100 (13th overall) and 26.46 in the 200 (sixth). Sophomore Ashley Black had a PR in the 100 (12.97), and junior Rebecca Neilson shaved 10 seconds off her previous 800-meter PR with a 2:26.28. Complete results are posted at www.ucdavisaggies.com.
