Ashland High softball team drops a pair; SOU stays hot in Arizona Wire Reports Despite a steady downpour, Ashland on Tuesday managed to squeeze in a pair of non-conference games, losing both at North Mountain Park. The Grizzlies took Sheldon to nine innings before dropping a 6-5 contest, then fell in five innings to Thurston, 14-4. Megan Beugli went 3-for-3 and pitched all nine innings in the opener, while Aimee Jeska added two hits. Ashland Daily Tidings/DENISE BARATTA Sheldon scored two times in the top of the ninth to secure the win. Ashland (1-3) pushed a run across in its half of the ninth but left the bases loaded. The five-inning affair with Thurston, which was called due to the 10-run mercy rule, started off as a slugfest by both sides before cascading into a rout. The Grizzlies answered a five-run first by Thurston with three of their own in the bottom half, but they couldn't counter a seven-run third inning. Alysse Carlson led Ashland at the plate with two hits in four at-bats. The Grizzlies continued their spring break schedule today at North Mountain Park against neighborhood rival Phoenix. The first pitch was scheduled to be thrown at 10 a.m. AHS Baseball The first day of the Ashland Baseball Tournament was rained out Tuesday. The tournament was set to resume today, with games scheduled to begin at noon and 3 p.m. at North Mountain Park. SOU Softball At Tucson, Ariz., Brandi Brown picked up a pair of pitching wins as Southern Oregon University cruised to two victories. The 18th-ranked Raiders (12-1) blanked Hastings (Neb.) College, 6-0, then downed Eastern Connecticut State, 8-2. Brown improved to 12-0, while Lisa Aitchison pounded a three-run home run against ECS to provide the big scoring blow. Haley Varley, Kirby Mackay, Seanna Doyel and Kendra Kohler each had two hits against Hastings College. Aitchison, Varley and Kohler contributed two hits apiece in the second game. SOU wraps up its road trip today with a 1 p.m. contest against Hastings and a 3 p.m. game with Whittier College. The Raiders open league play at noon Saturday with a doubleheader against Concordia. The next day, they'll play a non-league twin bill against Simon Fraser which will also begin at noon.
