However that does not seem to be the case when you open a cannabis dispensary in Southern Oregon. There have been several dispensaries open in different towns surrounding Ashland. The dispensary applicant in Ashland has been forced to do things that are apparently not required for other dispensaries. This foot-dragging against the Ashland dispensary has been going on for months while several others have opened after the Ashland dispensary applied! This foot-dragging by the OMMP is unacceptable and creates a hardship for some people who do not have the ability to go out of town or grow their own. Why is Ashland being singled out and harassed in this manner? Why is there no written protocol with guide lines to open a dispensary ? Is it just the arbitrary decisions of a bureaucrat? The astounding hostility against medical cannabis is everywhere in government and the press. I have read in your paper, indeed, most all other newspapers, one negatively slanted story after another. A report published last year ( which did not appear in your paper) from the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that over a 20-year period cannabis smokers generally did not experience a loss of lung function! In fact, "many actually had enhanced lung capacity"! There have been thousands of studies about the positive effects of cannabis published, and none have appeared in your paper! "Change is the only constant in our lives." The people have voted and it's the law; even though you might not like it! R.L. Tokareff, Ashland Bank was insulting What is it with banks these days? Recently, my girlfriend and I visited a local branch of a major bank to purchase foreign currency for investment purposes. We were instructed we would first have to open an account. As we sat with the personal banker, she began to rudely interrogate us as to the purpose of our account and how we would be using it. I explained we were interested in purchasing foreign currency. She quickly asked if we had accounts with other financial institutions, and why we weren't purchasing foreign currency from them. I explained my other bank did not offer this service. As she continued to push the issue, we were about to get up and leave when the branch manager interrupted and explained that numerous customers have opened a new account only to purchase foreign currency and then close the account days later. That was understandable, but why is it necessary to treat a new customer as a nuisance? Instead of understanding why their bank was better and we were valuable customers, we walked out feeling insulted! Now I can  understand why so many of my friends have moved their money to the credit union. Maybe we'll have to do that too! Robert Wagner, Ashland A great department I don't know the name of the motorcycle policeman who stopped me on Jan. 15. I think I was too rattled to ask, but he is the most courteous, considerate and understanding of people I have ever met. If all our police personnel are like him, we have one great department. Maxine Scott, Ashland Time to stop skiing? Isn't it time for the discussions concerning the lack of snow on Mount Ashland to include the point of view that commercial skiing on our mountain may possibly be no longer sustainable? Is it a taboo subject, an unspoken but understood avoidance because it's unthinkable? How ironic here in Ashland, where climate consciousness is so highly developed! How much of a drain on our community's resources are we willing to absorb before we look this issue straight on?
