The new communities are Birchwood Lane, Blackberry Lane, Granite Street, Royal Oaks Estate, Tamarack Place, Tolman Creek Park and Clay Street.  "With the addition of the new communities, Ashland is not only leading the state in Firewise results, but the entire nation," said a release from Fire Adapted Communities coordinator Steve Parks. The program encourages neighborhoods to prepare for fires in wildland-urban interface areas, where neighborhoods abut large stands of vegetation. Homeowners, firefighters, planners, land developers and other community leaders team up to make the landscaping wildfire-resistant and protect structures from spreading flames. Key steps include creating plenty of defensible space around structures, removing dead, dry vegetation, and breaking up the terrain with flowerbeds, walkways and rock walls. "As a result of this program, widespread hazardous vegetation like Leyland and Italian cypress, blackberry and juniper have been removed throughout the community," the release says. Ashland's infamous Oak Knoll fire, which destroyed 11 homes in 2010, is a worst-case scenario example of what wildland-urban interface burns can do to neighborhoods in a short period of time. The new communities will be be formally recognized at a noon ceremony Saturday, April 11, at Ashland Fire & Rescue Station No. 2, 1680 Ashland St. The neighborhoods will also have Firewise signs at each of their entrances.
