Contests, entertainment and educational activities are all free of charge. Families growing backyard zucchinis are invited to let them grow, grow, grow, and enter the "giant zucchini contest." Market Bucks will be awarded to the first, second and third heaviest zucchinis. Participants need only drop their zucchini at the market information booth by 11:30 a.m. Weigh-in to take place at noon. Daddy's donut-eating contest will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a watermelon seed spitting contest at 11 a.m. For a more artistic event, participants should stop by the market information booth to enter the food coloring contest. Other activities include art demonstrations and hands-on activities by Healing Heart Art Studio, food safety demonstrations by Robins of the Rogue personal chef service, spinning wheel demonstrations by Greensprings Bodyworks. Face painting, a clown and the balloon man will round out the fun. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Goldman Family Singers, Banjo Bill and Dulcimer Jack. Children nine years old and older will have an opportunity to work behind the scenes with a select grower, crafter or food processor from for 15 minutes 12:30 to 1 p.m. Pre-registration by 11:30 a.m. is required at the information booth. Kids Day at the Market is also the time for children 6 to 14 years old to sign up for the newly forming kids Co-op Booth beginning Aug. 22. The Kids Coop Booth will be an opportunity for kids with home gardens to become junior members of the market and bring their produce to sell with other junior members twice a month. The Ashland Market is located at 1420 East Main Street in the parking lot of the Ashland National Guard Armory at the corner of Wightman and East Main. The Medford Market is located at 1701 Highway 99 in the parking lot of the Medford National Guard Armory just south of Stewart Avenue and the South Medford Interchange.
