Nagel, who coached the Grizzly football team to three state titles in 20 years before stepping down from that position following the 2002 season, will stay at AHS until his retirement becomes official Feb. 27. Nagel was hired to coach the football team in 1983 and was promoted to athletic director prior to the 1991 school year. He said Oregon's budget crisis contributed to his decision, but wasn't the deciding factor. "Just with PERS, the retirement situation being the way it is, so uncertain, coupled with the fact that I'm just antsy to move in a different direction and probably get into more coaching," he said, when asked why he's moving on. Nagel said he's considering coaching for a European league or college football, adding that he already has an interview lined up for the head coaching job at College of the Siskiyous. "You just have a love for the game and I enjoyed it and it was just time for me to make a change and kind of reenergize," he added. Nagel said he had no idea who would replace him and when, adding that he would not have a say in that process. Under Nagel's guidance, the Grizzly football program went from conference doormat to state power, winning the school's first state title in 1989 before capturing two more in '91 and '98. He said he wants to be remembered as "a guy who was at the right place at the right time and worked hard, and produced some good results."
