Students snag history awards Local students competed for the top spots in the Oregon National History Day-Southern Oregon District Competition on the Southern Oregon University Campus. Last weekend, participants from all over the Rogue Valley presented historical papers, documents, dramatic performances and tabletop exhibits representing the theme, "Rights and Responsibilities in History." The event, co-sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and SOU, was the first level of a multi-level national competition. First-, second- and third-place winners will go on to compete at the state level in April at Willamette University. First and second place winners at the state level will then compete in the National History Day Contest in June in Wash. D.C. Those participating at the state level include Talent Middle School students: Gregory Scholom, first place junior individual documentary; Cassandra Williams, first place junior individual documentary; Elizabeth Shinn and Angela Kramer; first place junior group performance; Abigail Carroll, first place junior individual exhibit; Royan Dorn, second place junior individual exhibit; Forest Giardina and Peter Williams, second place junior group exhibit; Matt Libante, second place junior historic paper; and Megan Rice, honorable mention in junior historic paper. The competition, in its 11th year, is designed to encourage students to learn history through original research and creative work. Funding for the event was provided by the Oregon Community Foundation through a grant from the Harriet Winton Fund.
