The board hesitated about the cost of the contract with Dull Olson Weeks Architects Inc. to complete a master plan for Ashland High School by March and will continue reviewing the proposal at a meeting Thursday morning. “I don’t like it but, on the other hand, facilities planning takes money,” board member Amy Amrhein said. The contract, if approved, would be the second DOWA has signed with the Ashland School District in 2005. The Portland-based firm is in the process of completing a $57,000 facilities study for the district that could will act as the drafting of a facilities improvement bond the school district may float in the November 2006 election. The Bond and Facilities Planning Committee recommended the district hire a consultant to master plan the high school and Ashland Schools Superintendent Juli Di Chiro solicited the bid from DOWA. No other firm was asked to bid on the project. “It seemed like it wouldn't be cost-effective or process-effective to bring in another firm,” Di Chiro said. Di Chiro admitted the cost of the AHS master plan surprised her, but indicated that using the same consultant that is evaluating district facilities would streamline the process and may produce better, faster results. “The end product would be, pretty much, an overall plan for the next 30 years,” Di Chiro said. Also on Monday night, the school board reallocated $674,000 from the transfers fund to cover bond and maintenance expenses. More than half of the money — $475,000 — will be reimbursed if the bond passes. “We do have expenditures that were not budgeted,” district business manager Pam Lucas said. Transfer fund assets cannot be spent and some reserves are kept there to be allocated as necessary, according to Di Chiro. Of Note In other business, the school board: • decided to hold a special session at 10 a.m. Thursday to discuss the parameters of contract negotiation with Di Chiro. • authorized an update of social studies curriculum at all levels through the adoption the Oregon State Standards for the subject area. Elementary principals Juanita Fagan and Susan Hollandsworth completed a study of social studies curriculum with help from teachers, and Fagan recommended the state standards to the board. • revised board policy JHFE regarding child abuse that will make the personnel files of any district staff person convicted of child abuse public documents. • appointed school board member Mat Marr as the board liaison to the Wellness Committee, which is creating a wellness policy that integrates health and physical education curriculum with school cafeteria nutrition plans. • received reports on the progress of the Bond and Facilities Planning Committee, the K-8 Committee, the Kindergarten Task Force and the Ashland Schools Foundation.
