--> --> July 17: Raider Club sets fund-raising mark Ashland Daily Tidings Another successful school year by Southern Oregon University's intercollegiate sports teams has been capped by a record-breaking fund-raising campaign. The Raider Club, the school's sports booster organization, completed its annual scholarship fund drive this week with over $80,000 in pledges, a 60-percent increase from last year and a total that eclipsed the old record of $70,100 established in 1997. "The more people find out about SOU and particularly the Raider Club, the more they want to get involved," Raider Club president John Schweiger said. "It's easy to get people excited about a program with student-athletes who compete and graduate at a high level." Funds are dispersed proportionately to SOU's 12 sports teams to assist student-athletes in their academic pursuits. The 2000-01 Raider sports teams posted a 112-81 record in intercollegiate action, and the .580 success rate represents the school's fifth consecutive winning year and the fifth-best overall campaign since 1980 when the NAIA began sanctioning women's championship events. SOU also captured its fourth national wrestling championship as well as three conference sport titles. "Whenever our teams experience success, it's a reflection of the efforts and generosity of our booster club," SOU athletic director Phil Pifer said. "We're faced with many funding challenges, so we count on (the club) to keep us competitive with other schools when it comes to scholarship aid."
