--> --> Freshman sensation Johns gains medalist honors; AHS baseball roundup By Chris Miller Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland freshman sensation Stephanie Johns Tuesday fired a red-hot 85 at the Cedar Links Golf Course to win medalist honors in a Southern Oregon Conference girls golf meet. Johns beat Roseburg's Heather Warner by one stroke and Jennifer Gaston by six strokes to take home the honors. The Grizzlies finished with a team score of 476, good enough for fifth-place. Roseburg took home the team honors with a 368. Grizz fifth-year coach Stephanie Santos said Roseburg again is the team to beat in the SOC this year because of its experience. "They (Roseburg) have all been country club girls their whole lives," she said. Last year the Grizz girls finished in fifth place in the conference, a disappointing ending for Santos. "We did OK," she said. "We were supposed to get third or fourth in the conference, but had a player who did not want to miss school for two days for the district tournament. "I had to bring a girl in who had never played 18 holes before," she added. "This killed us." Santos looks to improve on 2001, especially with the play of Johns. The Grizz only return two golfers from last year's squad - senior Bianca Montagnino and junior Kelly Thompson. Sophomore Kristen Brown completes the Grizz starting four. The top two teams from each conference make the state tournament, as do the top two individuals. The next SOC match is scheduled for April 2, and will be played at Rogue Valley Country Club. Ashland Baseball At Klamath Falls, three Henley pitchers held Ashland's potent offense to two hits Tuesday in a 4-2 non-league win over the Grizzlies. The loss dropped Ashland to 3-2 overall. Grizz senior Mike Allen started on the mound and was tagged with the loss. The Ashland defense didn't help him out, committing a season-high five errors. Morgan Grohs had three RBIs for Henley in its season opener. Henley scored all the runs it would need - three - in the first two innings. Email your...
