The win over the defending champions wrapped up a perfect three-game run through the four-team tournament for APT and advanced it to the Oregon state tournament, which begins July 9 in Redmond. “Ore-Cal came out battling from the very beginning like we knew they would,” APT manager Bobby Heiken said. “They’re a team that knows how to win. And it took us a couple innings to get going, but once we did. …It wasn’t a perfect game, but I’m proud of how we competed the whole tournament.” After APT’s big start, Ore-Cal scored one in the bottom of the second and another in the third to cut the lead to 5-2, but two fielder’s choice grounders and a passed ball allowed APT to extend its lead to 8-2 in the fourth. That lead proved to be enough for complete game-winner Gabby Heiken, who struck out 11 and allowed two earned runs on seven hits. Catcher Kirsten Morgan, the youngest player on the team at 10 years old, led APT with three hits in the championship-clinching victory. Also for APT, Rae Goff was 9-for-11 in the tournament, and Harper Wells 8-for-11. “The impressive thing was that every girl contributed,” Bobby Heiken said of his team’s undefeated tournament run. “And (Saturday) against Ore-Cal, we were able to move some people around and get some people playing different positions and we didn’t skip a beat.” APT also played Ore-Cal in Saturday’s semifinal round and won that game convincingly, 25-0. Heiken said it was nice for his team to finally face a little adversity after a long series of blowouts that go back to the regular season. “It was kind of rough but the girls played through it,” he said, “and it was something that we needed to do.” The Distirct 6 title is a first for an Ashland 11/12 softball team in at least 15 years. Five players on the team won the D6 championship at the 9/10 level last season: Heiken, Goff, Shelby Brown, Tatum Pantle and Jess Traynor. Baseball Ean Lawrence allowed two runs and struck out 10 in four innings and Toby Barnes had three hits, including a home run, as Ashland beat Klamath Falls 6-3 in the semifinals of the 11/12 Little League District 6 tournament Sunday in Klamath Falls. Barnes also pitched two innings, striking out six, for Ashland, which advanced to the championship round Wednesday. Lawrence and Ian McKenna-Wood had two hits apiece, and Jackson Kemper and Tripp Repp each had one hit. If Ashland loses Wednesday it will get another shot in a winner-take-all game Thursday.
