"It's insane, there's eight major events in one week," said Henry McMillan, AHS co-student body president. Homecoming week kicked off Monday with twin day followed by "Bling-Bling" day and last night's Battle of the Bands. Today marks another day of events including superhero day and the annual Powder Puff competition. Powder Puff kicks off at 7 p.m. tonight at the AHS Walter A. Phillips Field. Girls from each grade level will toss the pig skin around while the boys test their skills in volleyball. The winning student volleyball team will compete against a staff All Star team. The evening will be refereed by AHS Health teacher Bruce Strauman. Strauman has refereed the event for the last decade or so. Students and faculty appointed him as "Emperor" of Powder Puff after learning he would continue to referee despite the reoccurrence of a brain tumor at the beginning of the school year. Thursday brings '80s rock day and a head-to-head match between the AHS varsity volleyball team and Crater High. The last home game for volleyball will include crowning AHS's homecoming king. Friday concludes the school's week with red and white day. Students also have an assembly at 2 p.m. in the AHS gym. The community is invited to attend and can sit in the upstairs seating area. Immediately following the assembly is the parade, with more than 20 floats. The parade will start at the high school and wind down Siskiyou Boulevard, crossing at Lithia Way before heading back to the school using Main Street. School officials warn that traffic could be delayed or blocked from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Friday night wraps up with the football game against South Medford High beginning at 7 p.m. The homecoming queen will be crowned at half time. Despite the recent theft of electronic equipment from AHS, the game will have a public announcement system, according to Athletic Director Jim Nagel. "Lithia Sound has talked to me about donating for the P.A. in the stadium," Nagel said, adding the equipment will be used for the remainder of the football season or until the equipment is recovered. Homecoming week concludes with a dance at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the Britt Ballroom at Southern Oregon University. Leeanne Wallace, AHS Leadership teacher, said that in addition to the tremendous amount of work on the students' part, the week was a success thanks to the volunteer parents and community members who stepped forward to lend a hand.
