Bloomsbury Books "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger. Romantics who long for a good love story that's not sugar-coated or Disneyesque will love this tale of Henry, who suffers from time-travel disease, and his highly unusual lifelong romance with Claire. While Henry's age is in flux, Claire ages normally. If it sounds improbable, it's rescued by Niffenegger's lovely writing and the perfect bittersweet ending. - Sheila. "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. The story is narrated by Christopher Boone, a 15-year old autistic mathematical genius, falsely accused of killing his neighbor's dog. He sets out to track down the real killer. Overwhelmed by the world around him, he is also confronted by a larger family mystery, and must struggle with the reality of a startling deception. Mark Haddon has written a touching and poignant first novel, with a protagonist that will capture your heart. - Anita. "Brick Lane" by Monica Ali. This incredible first novel is topping best-seller lists and winning literary prizes in Britain. It is the story of a woman, born in Bangladesh and transported to London by an arranged marriage, and her quest to find her voice. Ali is witty, compassionate, wise and unique. You will never want her book to end. - Sheila. "In The Lake of the Woods" by Tim O'Brien. A truly fine novel - disturbing, deep and filled with dark secrets. John Wade suppresses the unspoken horror of Vietnam and his childhood years, but in the end the fissure that comes from the deceit is unstoppable. O'Brien is lucid and gripping; Wade's downfall from promising politician to suspected murderer is felt by the reader to be the only conclusion to Vietnam's aftermath. - Nancy. "The Sparrow" by Mary Doria Russell. A powerful novel - uplifting, disturbing, and so compelling that I couldn't put it down. The story takes place in Puerto Rico, Naples and Rakhat (four light years away) and combines science fiction, mystery, and spirituality. "The Sparrow" has intelligent, engaging characters and an intriguing plot that raises difficult questions but doesn't patronize the reader with pat answers. It is written with wit and great compassion for "the long dark night of the soul" which is such a part of the human experience. - Marilyn. Bookwagon "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant If you're looking for exquisite writing coupled with an unforgettable story, I highly recommend this novel. Set in biblical times, this is the story of Dinah and her four mothers. Dinah, daughter of Jacob and sister to Joseph, was but briefly mentioned in the book or Genesis. Now, this enriching novel gives readers the untold story of how women, lived, loved, and suffered in a time of turmoil and strife. - Lisa. "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea" by Gary Kinder. Kinder spent ten years researching and writing this true adventure of the salvage of the SS Central America, a side wheel steamer that went down in a hurricane in 1857 with 21 tons of California gold on board. A fascinating account of a great treasure hunt. - Carl. "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel, is, to borrow a cliche, a great American novel. It is the story of a bunch of Texas Rangers who decide to go on a cattle drive, and start a ranch in Montana. The Characters are so vividly drawn; you won't want the book to end. This is a book worth reading again. It is also a well made TV miniseries with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall in the lead roles. - Carl.
