No other town can touch it. Maybe Mardi Gras can approach it, but Ashland’s excels in that colorful flavor of old-time, hometown fun that puts the children at the center of it all. The main can’t-miss event is the Children’s Halloween Parade, an outlandish, humungous parade — more of a march, perambulation or ramble, really — through downtown, from the Ashland Public Library to the Plaza. The spirits start moving at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. They call it “children’s” because there’s no question in your mind that every person in it obviously felt called to revert to childhood and is decked out in costumes you just can’t believe — the usual ghouls, ghosts and goblins, plus Star Wars characters, Snow White, you name it. Someone even marched once as the “junk drawer” we all have in the kitchen. The one-mile walk-run in Lithia Park starts at 10:30 a.m., with the 5K and 10K at 11:15. The Halloween Spooktacular dance, “a twisted carnival of freaks and fools, serving up spooky surprises,” at the Historic Ashland Armory starts at 7 p.m. It’s for age 21 and over. Ashland is notorious for its celebration of every holiday — and some in-between — but Halloween, especially on a weekend, is a thing worth dressing up for. We asked Ashlanders how they plan to celebrate All Hallow’s Eve (Oct. 31) or Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead, Nov. 1) this year. Cormac Devine — I’m going to be a wizard. I have shiny, pointed, gold and blue cap and a black cloak. I have no official plans. I have to make the best I can of it and eat as much candy as I can find. Ben Kramer — Halloween is the day when we recognize we are all wearing masks every day and admit it. I’m going to go out to the parade and people watch and put on a silly outfit. The Day of the Dead is a moment of recognition of the essential lessons from those who have passed on. Luna — I’m going to party at a Grateful Dead cover band concert in California. I’m going to be a fox and party all weekend, here and in California, dancing and drinking wine and whiskey. For the Day of the Dead, I will light sage and candles. Meadowsweet Levi — We’re going to the parade and look at all the costumes and watch for the GMO-free pumpkin. My son Lorien is going to be a bat and me the bat mom. He has wings and pointy hat. We just celebrated the second annual Day of the Dead in Talent, listening to beautiful music and carving pumpkins. It’s an exciting holiday, getting together with the children and dressing up to enjoy the day. Paige Frazer — We’re going to the parade, hang with friends and family. I’m going to be a witch, a vintage witch, not a creepy, scary one, in velvet skirt. My son is going to be a fireman. Me and my husband are going to the Spookadelic dance at the Armory.
