Ashland, which has already clinched the No. 1 seed out of its pool, handled Medford American Blue 11-0 on Saturday and came back to beat Phoenix-Talent 8-5 on Sunday. Ashland next faces Klamath Basin in another pool play game at 6 p.m. tonight on Field 2. Both District 6 semifinal games start at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with Ashland to face the No. 2 seed out of Pool A. The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday. Ashland and Phoenix-Talent went back and forth until Ashland put the hammer down in the fifth inning by scoring five runs. Outfielder Lee Dodds singled home the tying run in the breakout inning and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run. Catcher Jake Scarminach lined a bases-loaded double to score two more. “I’m very proud of my team,” Ashland coach Steve Dodds said. “They have not made mistakes and they’ve done what’s expected of them. They’re playing very well, and I can’t say that it’s above expectations because our expectations are very high for these kids. They’re doing everything that I hoped that they would do.” Scarminach had two doubles, while shortstop/pitcher Luke Baldrica went 3-for-4 with a leadoff home run and a double. Max Anderson and first baseman Zach Mora also had doubles for Ashland. Brent Hegdahl pitched the first three innings for Ashland and Baldrica pitched the last three. Hegdahl allowed three runs and struck out four, while Baldrica gave up two runs and struck out three. For Phoenix-Talent, Tanner Steinmetz and Joey Ortiz hit back-to-back homer runs and Alex Hobson smacked a double. On Saturday, Hegdahl crushed a three-run homer in the first and it was all Ashland from there in a game that was called after four innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Baldrica went 3-for-3 with a double, Mora added another double and outfielder Jackson Volz tripled. Anderson started on the mound for Ashland and shut out Medford Blue through the first three innings before giving way to Hegdahl, who did the same in the fourth. In other games over the weekend, South Suburban won two games by a combined score of 43-0, Medford American Red won two games by a combined score of 26-4 and Phoenix-Talent beat Klamath Basin 13-1. 9-10 all-stars At Talent, Ashland’s 9-10-year-old Little League all-star team won two games over the weekend to overcome an opening day loss and advance to today’s District 6 semifinals. Ashland and Phoenix-Talent play tonight at 6 p.m. at the Talent Little League field, with the winner advancing to play either South Suburban Blue or Klamath Basin in the championship round. Ashland edged Medford American Red 5-2 on Saturday and trounced South Suburban Blue 15-5 on Sunday to snare the No. 1 seed out of Pool B. South Suburban Blue, which entered Sunday’s game 2-0 in pool play, scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Ashland responded by scoring three in the bottom of the fourth and eight in the fifth — on two hits and six walks — to win by the 10-run mercy rule. Third baseman Jamie Flynn led Ashland by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and three RBIs, while shortstop William Crowley added a two-run single in the fifth. First baseman Danial White chipped in a run-scoring single. Ashland pitcher James Skinner held South Suburban to five hits and two earned runs to pick up the complete-game victory. He walked one, struck out one and also ran down a base-runner at the plate to preserve Ashland’s 7-5 lead in the top of the fifth. Ashland had a tougher time against Medford American Red, which jumped on top 1-0 when Jonah Smith stole home in the top of the second. Ashland came back by scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning and two more in the fourth. Flynn again led Ashland’s charge. He went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a triple and also picked up the complete-game victory on the mound by holding Medford Red to two runs on seven hits. Ashland also got key hits out of center fielder Jack Mitchell-Hooge and Crowley.
