Tax return help made available Ashland Daily Tidings The Oregon Department of Revenue will extend the hours of its tax assistance telephone lines starting April 2 and continuing through April 16. Taxpayers can contact a tax services representative from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday toll free at 1 (800) 356-4222 in Oregon, or (503) 378-4988. Due to the large number of calls expected as the tax deadline nears, Joann Martin, manager of the Tax Services Unit, recommends taxpayers call between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. when the telephone traffic is lighter. "The additional hours mean we can help more taxpayers as they prepare their Oregon tax returns for the April 16 deadline," Martin said. Taxpayers can find out the status of their 2000 income tax refund 24 hours a day by calling the Tax Services Unit number. Three pieces of information are needed to process the request: social security number, the type of tax return filed (40, 40S, 40N, or 40P) and the amount of the refund expected. If the department has received the return, the message will give an estimate of the processing time. Spanish-speaking residents can call (503) 945-8618. For TTY (hearing or speech impaired only), the year-round toll-free number in Oregon is 1 (800) 886-7204. In Salem the number if (503) 945-8617. These numbers are answered by machine and a representative will return the call.
