Grizzlies buck Roughriders' challenge Wire Reports The Ashland High baseball team got a little help from its friends across the diamond and ran its non-conference baseball record to a 3-0 with a sweep Thursday of Roosevelt, at the junior varsity baseball field. The Grizzlies benefited from four Roosevelt errors in taking the first game, 12-3. The Roughriders of the Portland Interscholastic League doubled their fielding miscues in the nightcap, a 12-1 Ashland win. Ashland junior Jackson Rowe prepares to lay down a bunt. Ashland Daily Tidings/CHRIS MILLER The Grizzlies amassed 13 hits in Game 2, with Arron Nelson going 3-for-3 and Chad Hegdahl and Jackson Rowe each rapping two. Rowe scored three runs. "Offensively, we did pretty much what we should have done," said Grizzly coach Jason Robustelli. "Their pitching came out kind of flat and they weren't too deep. They were having trouble finding the strike zone, and we just waited." On the other side of the ball, said Robustelli, "we played really well. We're kind of proving we have a defense. I'm liking that part of it." In the nightcap, Ashland built a 10-0 lead through three innings. That was more than enough for starter Chad Hegdahl to work with. He allowed one hit in five innings, striking out seven and not walking anyone. Hegdahl had trouble getting his curveball to work but did a nice job of spotting his fastball. "He's just trying to get some innings in and get ready for the season," said Robustelli. "It was not the sharpest I've seen him throw, but he's improving all the time." In the first game, Ashland erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning, combining five of its seven hits with two errors, a couple of walks and a hit batsman. Bryan Clevenger had two hits and three runs and Rowe two hits and two runs. Starter Micah Weston got the pitching win, allowing two hits in five innings, striking out four and walking four. Ashland plays host to Crescent Valley for a 1 p.m. game today at either North Mountain Park or the junior varsity field. The Roosevelt game was supposed to be part of the four-team Ashland Baseball Tournament, but the tourney was cancelled after a constant stream of rain made the field at North Mountain Park unplayable.
