But the Ashland High cross country team will take it. On a perfect day, the Grizzlies would have swept the team competition and sported the winners to both the boys' and girls' races at the SOC district championships. Instead, the Ashland boys captured state-qualifying second place Saturday with 54 points, behind a stacked Crater squad (27 points) at Stewart Park. "Our boys team really came through today," Grizz head coach Bob Julian Jr. said. "Crater's really good and they're hard to beat." Seniors David Morgan and Andy Wright came in second and third, trailing Comet Isaac Stoutenburgh to the line. Stoutenburgh cruised to a final time of 15 minutes, 20.9 seconds, with Morgan finishing in 15:28.6 and Wright clocking a 15:31.3. "I'm pretty happy," Wright said. "I've been third the past three years. It's a curse, but I ran close to my lifetime (personal record)." Junior Natalie Hemphill powered to fourth place overall in the girls' race to earn an individual berth to the state championships Saturday in Eugene. "I like the fact that she went for it," Julian said, adding that Hemphill has been sick and that she tried to hang with eventual-winner Kendall Nelson of Crater. "She's got to keep doing it." The Grizzly girls finished fourth in a loaded team competition. Klamath Union won with 58 points, Crater was one shy with 59 to clinch the second team trip to state. North Medford had 99 and Ashland 101. "The girls ran really well," Julian said. "We just didn't have that fifth girl that was needed." Tough competition Although Ashland hoped to knock off Crater, the team had no misconceptions as to just how strong the Comets are this season. Ranked No. 7 regionally, Crater had three runners in the top-five and all five scorers came across the line before any other team had three racers in. "They're not ranked seventh in the region for nothing," Wright said. They're definitely contenders for the state title. Realistically, I think we're in the top-four [at state]." Ashland had strong races from their top-six runners on Saturday. Senior Spencer Bonney, normally the team's No. 4 runner, popped up to third on the team's depth chart to finish 11th overall. Junior Cameron Barleen was 13th and freshman Justin Faudree came through in 24th to round out the Grizz scorers. "Our fifth-man issue, which was a question mark for us all year long, is gone," Julian said. "With the exception of Crater, our fifth man beat every other fifth man in the conference. Next week we'll go after that state trophy I think we're capable of."
