Because of the heavy snowfall, the ski area was closed on Monday, but expects to reopen with 2-feet of powder on Tuesday. On Sunday, at least eight minor accidents occurred, but because of the number of vehicles involved, sheriff's deputies were still sorting out how many were due to different incidents. Many of the accidents occurred on a section of roadway approximately one-half mile from Old Highway 99. In the worst accident Sunday, one vehicle lost control in a curve, crossed the center line and struck head-on into a vehicle driven by a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy. Sgt. R.C. Kennedy was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for minor shoulder injuries. On Saturday, four separate accidents occurred on the same road. During one accident, Caylei T. Fujas, 22, of Ashland was transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center for serious injuries, said deputies. Fujas was heading east into a curve in her 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup when the vehicle lost control and struck a Honda Pilot and a Ford F150 pickup. Sheriff's investigators believe that icy and snow-covered roadways, as well as drivers operating their vehicles beyond recommended rates of speed, were contributing factors in the accidents.
