This year's fall algae bloom in Reeder Reservoir is persisting at a fairly dense level as city staff has reduced the amount of chemical usually used to kill the algae. A similar bloom was reported during the early summer months as the water temperatures in the reservoir started to warm up. The algae bloom is caused by seasonal temperatures and is more affected with a decrease in water flowing into the reservoir. This is a natural process and will "right itself" with cooler temperatures, city officials said in a press release on Tuesday, that will soon lower the reservoir water temperature as it is now warmer than the early morning temperatures. The rains will help to dilute the amount of water in the reservoir and aid in cooling as well. City staff, with help from consultants, are studying water quality and water treatment options surrounding the changes in incoming raw water temperatures throughout the summer. Until the natural cooling and algae reduction process happens, staff will look into the opportunity to further reduce this year's algae bloom through a circulation pump / fountain at the reservoir to help reduce the negative affects of taste and odor in the city water. The iconoclastic stance of Ashland concerning all things governmental, schools included, will prove to be the downfall of the Town. Consolidate the schools, water, electricity witht the rest of the valley and you'd start to see some efficiencies from shared services. Check the water quality of New York or Chicago and investigate how they do their work. Perhaps, after the Council learns peaceful problem solving, it can tackle this easily resolved issue. jmarlow - Ashland - October 21st, 6:07 PM 'Its the Water-Stupid'...ADT staff should do a more in-depth article on our water system. About the use of TID water, about the level of chemistry used to abate algae growth. Reading the article leaves you wondering....what? "..the rains will dilute the water in Reeder..." And: "..as the algae level persists at a high level the city has reduced the amount of chemical used to kill the algae.." These statements are not particularly helpful or revealing... I do agree however that there are a few posters here who every once in awhile actually post something germane, revealing a glint of some neanderthalic intelligence. For months, I've been after these people to volunteer and do something besides type to elicit their desired change in Ashland. As you see, they just keep letting their fingers do the talking. Patrick - ashland, or. - October 24th, 8:22 AM Not being from a large City maybe I can taste the difference but Ashland's water has never tasted this bad or smelled this awful except during the floods when it was undrinkable. I heard the algae was form all of the pot growers in the watershed using fertilizers to get their buds to grow big and strong. Speaking of buds, doesn�t one of our councilors know everybody in the watershed? Maybe he could ask them to become concerned with our water instead of wasting our money on lawsuits with MAA. It's me again - ashland - October 24th, 10:56 AM If I put on my tinfoil hat, it's obvious that "someone" is up there fouling the watershed to prove a point... but it's less clear what that point is. At least the watershed is safe from MAA, and that's all that matters, right? Because if you can afford to live here, you can also afford to drink bottled water.
