I am reaching out for help to spread the word for the need of therapeutic foster homes in Southern Oregon. In recent years there has been a huge shortage of foster parents that are able to work with children in the states care that have behavior, emotional and developmental disabilities and as a result more and more children are having to be placed out of the area or, in the worst cases, in residential group homes until a suitable family is available. Shawnee Dale, therapeutic foster home certifier for family solutions Medford Leave the mural — change the ordinance A whimsical, delicate mural on Pioneer between Lithia and Main is in danger. The mural has been there for years, first on Maisys' wall, now the Book Exchange. Each time I walk by, it gives me a lift, warms my heart. But yesterday, the city demanded that the mural be obliterated — painted over — by Aug. 15. This is such a destructive, abusive act, it leaves me breathless. Apparently, there is an ordinance. My take on ordinances is that they exist to protect citizens from overuse, ugliness and lawless behavior. Zoning ordinances should be rigid. Art, however, demands discernment by human beings. Why do we have an ordinance that when followed kills beauty and abuses common sense? If something is ugly here, Ashlanders will put up a great clamor. Has anyone ever complained about this little mural? It is everything public art should be (even if on private space). It is appropriate, fits the space, and brings a smile. Art needs to give a new perspective, make one feel inspired or joyful, or provide food for thought. The city is about to spend thousands of dollars on public art. This can be a good thing. Ashland does many things well. I appreciate that we have no billboards or neon signs. But destroying what is essentially public art (art for the public to enjoy even on a private building) is egregious. Take a stroll on Pioneer past the Book Exchange. Then contact the City Council. Leave the mural. Change the ordinance.
