Main St., on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Christine Williams, Jim Finnegan, and Murray Huggins will accompany Freeman. Williams is a soprano, Finnegan is a baritone, and Huggins is a pipes master. The songs of Robert Burns will be featured in the performance. Burns wrote poems and songs that spoke of the lives and conditions of the common man with a sympathy and understanding of shared experience that made him a folk hero whose works have endured well beyond his death. Freeman has been performing both traditional and contemporary Scots folksongs including those of Burns in the U.S. and Scotland for twenty plus years in concerts, at festivals and any other place a wee song sung in a lilting incomprehensible dialect is appreciated. Freeman has five albums to his credit. The latest “A Bottle and A Friend” concentrates on Scots traditional songs with a good many by Robert Burns and before that “Robert Burns” is all songs or poems by Robert Burns two of which Brian has set to music. Oddly enough while Freeman was in Scotland in 1979 he found himself playing as much “surf” and “country music” as traditional Scots in the folk clubs and bars owing to his California upbringing. He found many of the themes in American country music are similar to Scots with the main difference being the doning of a cowboy hat instead of the kilt.
