Caldera received the gold medal for the Ashland Amber in the Classic English-Style Pale Ale beer style category in the World Beer Cup in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 6. Caldera’s victory was decided by a panel of 253 judges from 31 countries. Competition included 6,596 entries from 1,907 breweries in 55 countries. The Ashland Amber has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 5.6 percent and an International Bitterness Units (IBU) rating of 24. Lawnmower Lager has an ABV of 3.9 percent and an IBU of 16. Msn.com named Caldera "Best Brewery in Oregon," calling it “small, yet revolutionary.” Deborah Smith, general manager of the restaurant at the brew house, said that they were considered best in state because of the overall balance of taste in their beer. “We use whole flower hops in most of our beer, rather than pelletized,” Smith said. The use of whole hops allows for a fresher aroma, because pelletizing hops requires grinding and pressing the flower into pellets. The pelletizing process causes the flower to lose some of its essential oils. Caldera was the first brewing company on the West Coast to brew and can its own beer. Caldera specializes in canned beer because of their renowned micro brewing, but does also sell several of their beers in bottles. Ashland is home to both Caldera brewery and a tap house. The tap house in downtown Ashland features 20 Caldera beers on tap, as well as a family oriented restaurant. The brew house is off Exit 14 and also features a restaurant. This brewery offers 43 beers on tap and is home to Oregon’s largest beer bottle and can collection. The brew house also has an extra room in which they store bourbon barrels to age some of their most popular beer. This summer Caldera plans to release a non-alcoholic line of sodas and teas, including root beer, ginger ale, lemon-lime soda hop and Hibiscus Rose Petal ice tea. Another reason for the use of canned beer is that aluminum cans are 100 percent recyclable. Caldera says it is dedicated to being eco-friendly. From recycling to the design of the buildings, an effort is made to ensure nothing is wasted. Local ingredients, whenever possible, are used in the restaurants as well. “With all the great craft beer being produced in Oregon," the brewery said in a statement about being named best brewery in Oregon, "this is quite an honor!” Journalism student Caitlin Fowlkes is an intern for the Ashland Daily Tidings.
