I'd planned on voting against George Bush no matter who the Democratic party put up against him. But aside from criticisms of the president I hadn't seen much from John Kerry. As I began watching the debate, I was frankly concerned that all I would see was more of the same. But, I was thrilled to see his concise and brilliant points, leaving the president stammering with no response except to lash out with repetitious and weak rhetoric regarding what Bush still believes to be Kerry's only weakness: His ability to reconsider his position when new information arises. I see this as one of Kerry's great strengths, and am increasingly tired of the Republican party's sing-song criticism of actions I dearly wish Bush would consider taking. I can only hope that this pushes more undecided voters to make a decision - either because of John Kerry's strength or George Bush's focus on his own ambition - for the better of this nation! Janneke Strong Ashland Kerry direct, Bush not After all the spin and packaging we've all endured in this year's presidential contest, I was glad to hear the candidates themselves speak tonight. For me, the result was crystal clear: George W. Bush stammered, smirked, and stuttered his way through tonight's debate. John Kerry was far more direct and honest about what was supposedly W's home turf: the war on terrorism. Over and over, W tried to defend decisions that were rashly and poorly made, while Kerry offered clear and common-sense views that simply made good sense for this country. Kerry isn't perfect. But I find him to be both intelligent and trustworthy. Bush, in comparison, seems fixated on simplistic views that are embarrassing and dangerous. After watching this debate, I'm more certain than ever that a vote for Kerry will help steer this country in a far better direction than a vote for Bush. Brian A.
