FRIDAY Another big game at OIT SOU men look to keep league title hopes alive at Klamath Falls Opinion & Editorial — LETTERS TO THE EDITOR — OPINION PAGE POLICY COLUMNIST Updated Tuesdays: From the Right Side Mike Green Will Iraq become the new Kurdistan? Once upon a time, in the land of Mesopotamia, nearly 3,000 years ago, there was a place called Kurdistan. The people residing there were called Kurds. Long before Mohammed, and even before Jesus Christ was born of men, there lived the Kurds. One day the Kurds awakened and their country was gone, and they were suddenly living in the countries of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. In the aftermath of the takeover by the United States, Talabani emerged as Iraq's first Kurdish president. Ironically, this man fought for Kurdish independence from Iraq for many years. Today, Barzani rules the Kurdish north, where the oil-rich regions of Kirkuk are a grand prize. Allawi and his various relatives and strongmen remain in power despite having no political office (his cousin is Minister of Finance). Chalabi is Deputy Prime Minister and in December 2005 took over the Oil Ministry for a scheduled period of 30 days while the man he replaced was unexpectedly forced to take an unplanned vacation. Where that scenario will lead is anybody's guess. And what about the Shiites and Sunnis? They simply want their country back … sans America. In the meantime, while America has control over Iraq, the target has once again fallen on Iraq's neighbor, Iran. CASE IN POINT (OPED) Updated Mondays: — CASE IN POINT Pro-choice, pro-life: reframing the debate So much has been written about the conundrum of abortion — Roe v. Wade, right to life, right to choose, partial-birth abortion ban, unborn victims of violence act, life begins at ... fertilization? birth? or when? — that just raising the subject can cause the reader to grow weary, long before completing the first sentence. It is one of those defining issues that engages us as a society for so many disparate yet seminal reasons, one that the Supreme Court will certainly revisit sooner than later. And do so with Sandra Day O’Connor gone and Samuel Alito newly seated. Clearly, the American people are conflicted over abortion: while supporting Roe they understand the implications of abortion as a procedure, and recognize that it is a profoundly serious decision for any woman. To abort a fetus is invasive and traumatic, both physically and psychologically. And yet the public still wishes it to be an option for women; however, they view the choice not in the affirmative, but as the least of many evils. — OBITUARIES There is no police log today. Camelot pulls off a ‘Miracle’ Actors enjoy the power of recreating an inspirational true story In Review | Arthur's Dreams Playwright Richard Moeschl’s "Arthur's Dreams" superimposes the theme of death, rebirth and transformation of the human spirit onto mundane family events of three generations of the Ellis family. It’s a large undertaking, and it is to the playwright’s credit — as well as director Paul Roland’s skill — that, on the whole, it succeeds. Movies | T.V. | Calendar Stories updated by 6 p.m. Thursday ( Back issues available ) Camelot opens its 2006 season with William Gibson’s Tony Award Winning play, “The Miracle Worker.” This stirring dramatization of the story of Helen Keller is one of the most successful and warmly admired plays of the modern stage. LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS: Authors speaking in Ashland Movies: Now playing ‘Affluent beggars’ an opportunity to examine ourselves Forgive me, but I’m feeling yanked in a couple of directions by the current discussion / firefight over Jason Pancoast and Elizabeth Johnson — you remember, the “affluent beggars” who walk our streets and whose story has been spread across the country by the Associated Press. And it’s easy to say you feel compassion for the homeless until you meet people like Jason and Elizabeth who’ve been pretty, shall we say, up-front about their situation.
