A controlled burn Tuesday, May 10, in the Ashland Creek watershed just below the White Rabbit Trailhead on city forestland just on the south side of town was scheduled to blacken 25 acres. The city, U.S. Forest Service and Lomakatsi Restoration Project conducted the burn for forest health and community wildfire protection, according to an announcement by the Ashland Forest Resiliency Project. Smoke clearance was granted by the state of Oregon and smoke was predicted to move away from town during the day. Some lingering smoke may have drifted into town, especially toward the evening hours. Smoke-sensitive residents along Ashland Creek were urged to close their windows during evening hours Tuesday. The White Rabbit trailhead was closed for the day due to burn traffic and hoses laid across trails, including the Alice in Wonderland trail, BTO, Red Queen and Jabberwocky trails. About 40 firefighters from four countries and across the U.S. checked in Monday for classroom training on the Southern Oregon University campus Monday and Tuesday before moving to field work Wednesday, May 11, with plans to burn each day after as allowed by air quality and weather. The Ashland Prescribed Fire Training Exchange, or TREX, is a program sponsored by The Fire Learning Network, a cooperative program of the Department of Interior and Department of Agriculture agencies and run by the Nature Conservancy. International participants from Spain, the United Kingdom and Ashland’s Sister City of Guanajuato, Mexico will work alongside American counterparts to conduct a series of controlled burns across a variety of landscape and vegetation types in southwest Oregon, depending on weather conditions. Areas included in the exercise may be in the Ashland watershed, private, and Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest lands, as well as across the Siskiyou Mountains and Wild Rivers Ranger Districts of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and the Medford District BLM’s Ashland and Butte Falls Resource Areas.
