Ashland Calendar, Aug. 20, 2016 Saturday Aug 20, 2016 at 12:01 AM Saturday, Aug. 20 Growing Native Plants: Learn about the importance of using local native plant seeds for propagation of native plants in order to maintain local plant genetics more adapted to the Klamath-Siskiyou Ecoregion from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at North Mountain Park Nature Center, 620 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland. Admission is $10. Learn how to propagate and utilize native seeds for the following applications: native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, habitat restoration, native plant conservation and land stewardship. Oregon Honey Festival: The Oregon Honey (and Mead) Festival is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Historic Ashland Elks Lodge, 255 E. Main St., Ashland. The festival is held on International Honey Bee Day and is a fundraising event bringing art, honey tasting and honey bee conservation together in a delightful way for beekeepers and the public. Musicians include Sequoia, Carla Bauer and Jen Ambrose. Guests will view pollinator artwork, meet the artists, sample local honey and more. Beekeepers will be available to tell guests about their work and how to start and maintain a backyard hive. Kids can participate in activities too. Presale tickets are $8 and can be found at www.oregonhoneyfestival.com. Tickets are $10 at the door. Kids 8 years and under are free.  Surveillance Lecture: What are the scope and consequences of government surveillance, and what are the ethical and legal limits of surveillance practices? This is the focus of “Keeping Tabs on America: Surveillance and You,” a free conversation with Kristian Williams from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Williams has studied state surveillance for almost twenty years, writing as both a scholar and a journalist. Memorial Service: A funeral service for Senator Alan Bates will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Rogue River Room at Southern Oregon University, Ashland. Heart to Uganda: Debra Zaslow will talk about her recent trip to visit her daughter Rachel, born and raised in Ashland and director of Mother Health International, and granddaughter Amaya, at their birthing clinic in Northern Uganda at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at the Havurah, 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland. She will share photos and videos of the journey from safari to rural village, and talk about the groundbreaking work of the women at the birthing center. Admission is free. Donations for Mother Health International will be accepted. Monday, Aug. 22 Ashland is Ready: Ashland Fire & Rescue presents the third annual Ashland is Ready (AIR) from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Rogue River Room in the Stevension Union on the SOU campus, Ashland. AIR helps you to “Be Informed” and to “Get a Kit.” Each participant will take away an emergency kit worth more than $30. Registration is $10 required in advance. Seating is limited to 400. Tickets are on sale and are anticipated to sell out. Film Screening: A benefit screening of the film "Captain Fantastic" with award-winning writer and director Matt Ross will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Varsity Theatre, 166 E. A fundraising reception with Ross  at Scarpetta restaurant, 145 E. Main St., Ashland. The reception is $165 per person and includes wine, hors d'oeuvres and reserved seats at the film screening. A graduate of Ashland High School, Ross played Alby Grant on "Big Love" and Gavin Belson on "Silicon Valley," both acclaimed HBO series. The events benefit the Ashland Independent Film Festival. Talent Historical Society: Storyteller Thomas Doty will give a free performance and talk on the importance of finding and sharing stories from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Talent Historical Society Museum, 105 N.
