So, pompously, he proclaimed a National Day of Prayer. We’re puzzled, however, Just how, Mr. President, should we phrase our prayers? Should we... 1) Thank God that Katrina wasn’t even more devastating? 2) Beg him to erase at once all the damage he has caused? 3) Thank him for not drowning all the victims? 4) Honor him for sparing Aunt Jane, but not Uncle John? 5) Pray that he observe his own “Thou shalt not kill ” commandment? 6.) Praise him that we can pin the blame on the “devil”? 7.) Pray that we keep the faith that God is all-loving and all-good — despite his horrendous Katrina cruelty? So that Americans properly observe your Day of Prayer, Mr. Bush, we demand a serious response to this question: “How should we pray?” In giving it, do not lean on your old crutch, which says: “God works in mysterious ways — humans are not supposed to understand.” And do not muddy your response by knocking the questioner’s character, motives or intelligence when she notes that nothing fails like prayer. (For centuries haven’t we offered trillions of prayers for “peace on earth”?) . Nancy Fox Ashland/Port Leyden, N.Y. Local help aids musical NY tour As conductor of Siskiyou Violins, I would like to thank our community who by its generosity made our June trip to the New York Orchestra Festival possible; it was an absolute dream come true for my students and me. We could never have played at Carnegie Hall without local businesses and individuals that contributed and lent support by attending our preparatory concerts. Thanks to the Daily Tidings for publishing our press releases about our musical opportunity. And thanks to Temple Emek Shalom for allowing us to perform our send-off concert in their beautiful facility. I wish I could thank each one who contributed to the educational experience and the joy that our group derived from it, but space prohibits. Please know that my young students and I will be ever grateful those who gave life to our dream by their generosity to Siskiyou Violins. Faina Podolnaya Ashland Tidings missing local emphasis I just don’t get it. The Daily Tidings is a small-town newspaper. Please deliver more small-town news. We subscribers can get all of the “other news” we want from large newspapers, radio, TV and the Internet. For example the “backpage” section should always be used for local stories, not the Associated Press space fillers that are often used in this section. We have an abundance of local Ashland activities, accomplishments, etc. that would be much more in line with why I, and most of the people I know, subscribe to the Ashland Daily Tidings. The high school sports coverage is another thing that I don’t understand. Why does the Medford paper have a 900-word story on last night’s AHS football game and the Tidings article on the same game is less than 250 words. Our local kids deserve to see their names in the paper when they do well, and we subscribers want to see these young people publicly recognized for their efforts and accomplishments. It is bad enough that the Mail Tribune is providing better Ashland daily tidings than our own “local” paper. The fact that both newspapers are owned by the same company only adds insult to injury. Maybe the Tidings should just resign itself to letting the Tribune writers cover your stories (but I hope not!). Like the real estate mantra “location, location, location,” the Ashland Daily Tidings mantra should be “Ashland, Ashland, Ashland.” Ed Taylor Ashland Thanks for help with ASH move On behalf of our 15 developmentally disabled residents, Ashland Supportive Housing would like to thank this amazing community for your support. On Sept. 21, we moved five residents into our new group home in the Quiet Village area, with the help of several local fraternal organizations, local contractors and concerned individuals. We would like to publicly thank these people who, among others, offered services or monetary gifts to us and our residents in developing the new home: Trinity Episcopal Church, United Way of Jackson County, Lithia Springs Rotary Club, ASH Board members and their families, United Methodist Church, Ashland Duplicate Bridge Club, Deanna Sickler of Gateway Realty, parents of several residents, Max and Lucille Lindley, Pacific Fire Sprinklers, Bob Buckner, Walt Van Cantfort, Michael Crader Landscaping, Action Building ASH residents have been living in Ashland, in some cases, for 20 or more years. This community has provided so much kindness and generosity toward our residents! We feel blessed to be able to live, work and play in our fair city. Thank you for helping make Ashland our home.
