Tourist dollars cost us little while funneling millions of dollars from other places into the spin cycle of our local economy. Part of what comes out of that spin cycle is public and private partnerships that create affordable housing options. — OPINION PAGE POLICY COLUMNIST Updated Tuesdays: From the Right Side Mike Green Amazing Ahmed His name isn’t a household word. He couldn’t be picked out of a crowd by 99 percent of Americans. Even the president claims he doesn’t know who he is. Yet, he sat behind Laura Bush during the president’s state of the union address in 2004. President Bush and former president Bill Clinton have each allocated tens of millions of dollars through the CIA directly to him. He convinced congress, the NSA, the Pentagon and the American people that the U.S. needed to invade Iraq immediately because Saddam had WMDs. When he speaks, the highest levels of the U.S. government listen closely. Forget Bush. Disregard Cheney for the moment. And just ignore Rumsfeld and Powell altogether. Think about the man behind them all pulling the strings. CASE IN POINT (OPED) Updated Mondays: — CASE IN POINT The unitary executive theory settles in Over the last several years politicians and talk show hosts have suggested that in order to understand causation of a certain event — 9/11, for example — we must connect the dots. In other words, establish relationships between events that seem, at first blush, unrelated. Okay, fine. Let’s try and connect some dots. In the 2000 Republican presidential primary, John McCain and George W. Bush were locked in a fierce campaign for the nomination of their party. To the surprise of many, during the 2004 presidential campaign, John McCain stood stage center with the president in support of his reelection. In mid-December of last year, after much debate over the issue of torture as a means to extract information from detainees, John McCain attached an anti-torture amendment to the defense spending bill. When President Bush signed the bill into law over the New Year’s weekend, he quietly inserted what is known as a “presidential signing.” — OBITUARIES There were no police logs at press deadline Together, differently The Indigo Girls’ marriage of music and activism continues with delightful harmony Miller’s ‘Crucible’ in search of a hero A play widely regarded as an American classic that delves into the turbulent times of the Salem witch trials, opens Thursday at Oregon Stage Works. MORE LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT Book reviews: The Plot against America The Lincoln Lawyer Movies: Now playing Ashland’s cultural heritage should be held up as a model Recently I was looking through a collection of materials housed in our fine library concerning the history of the Ashland Chautauqua society. The Chautauqua movement was begun in America by the Rev. John Heyl Vincent in 1874. Like millions of others of his countrymen, Vincent was appalled by the horrors of the Civil War. No one had imagined at the outset that such a war could have been so bloody. One United States Congressman had said on the floor of the House that he did not fear such a conflict. He insisted that the blood drawn in the event of a war between the states could be “mopped up with a single pocket handkerchief.” Church Listings Ashland residents traveling nationwide and around the globe provide first-person accounts of their travels, complete with pictures to share their adventures with the Tidings' readers.
