Postal food drive delivers for the hungry Wednesday May 10, 2017 at 8:22 PM May 10, 2017 at 8:22 PM Local report Postal carriers will take part Saturday, May 13, in a drive to "stamp out hunger" during the National Association of Letter Carriers' annual food collection event. Local carriers will collect nonperishable goods for food banks donated by people across the country. Because the nation’s 175,000 letter carriers regularly visit every address in the country, they see the struggles in the communities they serve, and they believe it’s important to do what they can to help, the NALC said in announcing the event. A bag or bags of nonperishable food items may be left near mailboxes. Letter carriers will pick up the bags and, with the help of retired postal employees and countless volunteer, deliver them to local food agencies. Food bank shelves that filled up over the winter from holiday generosity are often bare by late spring. And food banks are particularly stretched in the summer months serving the millions of children who rely on meal programs that are suspended when school is out. Over the past 24 years, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive has collected more than 1.4 billion pounds of food.
