FREE SERVICE AARP offers tax preparation assistance Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Feb. 9, 2016 at 7:53 PM Posted Feb. 9, 2016 at 7:53 PM » Social News The AARP Tax-Aide program is once again providing free assistance in preparing individual tax returns in Ashland during this year’s tax season. This year tax help is available on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Grove, 1195 East Main St. in Ashland. The last day will be Monday, April 18, which is this year’s tax due date. Trained AARP Tax Aide volunteers help taxpayers prepare and electronically file federal and state returns. Upon arrival, each taxpayer is asked to fill out an interview form to ensure that all information needed to prepare the return is gathered efficiently and completely. Both spouses must be present to prepare a joint return. A tax counselor then inputs the information into the tax program in consultation with the taxpayer to create an accurate tax return. A separate Tax Aide counselor checks the return as a quality assurance measure. If everything checks out, the return is generally filed electronically. This provides faster refunds than returns filed on paper. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is targeted to taxpayers with low and moderate income, with special attention to those 60 and older. However, there are no formal income or age limits. Through a cadre of trained volunteers, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide has helped low- to moderate-income individuals for more than 40 years in every state and the District of Columbia. Last year the program assisted in preparing over 600 returns and generated about $600,000 in refunds at the Ashland site. Although there is no income threshold, the program does not provide assistance with complicated K1s (showing income from partnerships, certain corporations) or individual small business forms (Schedule Cs) with more than $25,000 in expenses or any inventory. Taxpayers who are uncertain about whether their situation is within the scope of the Tax-Aide program should bring their documents and questions to the Grove for evaluation. Be sure to bring complete documentation to help ensure returns are as complete and accurate. This includes: • Photo ID such as drivers’ license; • Social Security cards or Tax ID number) for the taxpayers and any dependents (children, etc.); • Any Form 1099s reflecting amounts distributed to a taxpayer, such as from a retirement plan, investment firm, etc.; • Any Form 1098 showing amounts paid on a mortgage or scholarship (1098-T); • Any W2s received from an employer; • Any forms related to health care coverage, including any form received from employers or a health care exchange that shows cost information or any subsidy received for the purchase of health care. These forms generally are those in the 1095 series (1095A, B or C); and • Last year’s tax return (even if prepared by the Tax Aide program), and especially if prepared elsewhere.
