Evangel scored three runs in the first and another four in the fifth as it moved to 2-0 at the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic with an 8-0 win over SOU. Kim Waltz collected three hits, drove in two runs and scored another three to lead the Evangel offense, while Brooke Ragan and Stefanie Beaverson each drove in a pair of runs. Waltz opened the offensive attack with a solo home run in the first. Beaverson capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run shot of her own that put the Lady Crusaders on top 3-0. Bauer started the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single, and Ragan added another two runs on her RBI single. Elizabeth LeClaire capped the four-run frame with a single that scored Julia Thrasher. Waltz ended the game in the sixth with her walk-off solo home run. Cara Bowling picked up the victory, tossing a five-hit shut out with four strikeouts. Cat Cousins was saddled with the loss after giving up seven runs on nine hits in four and two-thirds. But the Raiders found their offense early in the day’s second game. Southern Oregon scored four runs in the first three innings, and added another in the fifth, to knock off Thomas 5-1. Tanisha Burch paced the Raiders with a hit and three RBIs. Julianne Cree picked up the win, going the distance and allowing a run on four hits with five strikeouts. Southern struck in the first as Deni Rowley led off with a walk and later scored on Burch’s ground ball to first base following a Leann Foster single. They continued the offense in the second as Natalie Nielsen doubled with one away and scored on a Brin Tamblin single to right. The Lady Raiders struck again in the third as Burch delivered a double that scored Rowley and Aliesha Spradling who led off with a double and single, respectively. Lindsey Hansen suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in two and a third innings of work. In the third game, SOU defeated Bellevue 11-4. The Raiders continue tournament play Saturday in Georgia.
