Andrew Mariman | Ashland Daily Tidings An Oregon Department of Transportation plow removes snow from the Siskiyou Summit on Monday, shortly before heavy snow forced complete closure of Interstate 5 at 2 p.m. The road was closed again at 5:45 p.m., but kept open throughout the night. "There were so many accidents at times, when people were spinning out," said Lt. Curt Barthel with the OSP. "Our goal was just to get them up and out of the way. Things started to flow fairly well over the evening once all the vehicles got out of the way and it was sanded." OSP closed I-5 at the Siskiyou summit at 2 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., but was able to keep the interstate open through the night. The job became easier when the California Department of Transportation closed I-5 from Redding to Yreka and traffic was slowed at milepost 78 north of Grants Pass because of snow. No major accidents were reported over the Siskiyou Pass and there are currently no traveling restrictions mandated for traffic. Mount Ashland received 16 inches of new snow overnight, giving the ski and snowboard area 24 inches at the base and 30 inches of snow at the top. The area still needs more snow to open. Rain is expected throughout the day, with snow levels falling to 3,500 feet tonight. "Tonight we have a winter storm warning from 6 p.m. through 6 p.m. Wednesday," said Dan Weygand, a National Weather Service meteorologist at the Medford station. "It's a series of strong cold fronts." Between six and 12 inches of snow is forecasted for upper elevations tonight, before the precipitation changes to rain on Wednesday morning. "Siskiyou Summit will be a concern just through tonight," Weygand said. "By Wednesday morning it will change to rain." Weygand estimates the valley floor will get another 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rain tomorrow. Light rain is expected during the day on Thursday.
