'SOU opens 'House of Blue Leaves' The Department of Theatre Arts at Southern Oregon University will present a preview of their production of John Guare's "The House of Blue Leaves" at the university's Center Stage Theatre at 8 p.m., Thursday, February 27. The play will open the following night, Friday, February 28 and will run Thursdays-Sundays through March 2 and March 6-9. There will be a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8. After opening off-Broadway in 1971, the play went on to win Best American Play from the New York Drama Critics Circle. A successful revival of the play at the Lincoln Center Theatre in 1986 earned four Tony awards. Directed by Maggie McClellan, the dark comedy features songs and music by the playwright and tells the story of Artie Shaughnessy (C. A. Jessen), a middle-aged, aspiring songwriter who fears he has missed his fame and fortune. Weaving in and out of Artie's life are his insane wife Bananas (Heather Lundy) and a host of eccentric friends, relatives and business acquaintances. There is his social-climbing girlfriend, Bunny Flingus (Clea Plumb), Ronnie (Jeris Schaefer) Artie's AWOL son and Billy Einhorn (Casey Bates) a big Hollywood producer and Artie's childhood friend. Everyone is chasing after their visions of a better life only to be led on wild collision courses with unexpected reality. Tickets are $15, $13 for seniors and $8 for students. All seating is reserved. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and two hours before each performance. For more information, call 552-6348.
