--> --> Oregon in brief Nurses at OHSU authorize walkout PORTLAND - Nurses at OHSU Hospital rejected a contract offer Thursday and said they would walk off the job in mid-December. Another bargaining session was scheduled for Friday with a federal mediator in an attempt to skirt a strike by more than 1,000 nurses represented by the Oregon Nurses Association. The hospital had offered an 11 percent pay raise over two years - a competitive wage in the Portland area, said chief negotiator Bonnie Driggers, OHSU's nursing director. Nurses, however, asked for a 28 percent raise over two years, raising average pay to about $64,000. A full-time nurse at the hospital now makes about $50,000 a year, according to the nurses union. Former deputies jailed on sex charges KLAMATH FALLS - Two former corrections deputies were arrested Thursday on charges of having inappropriate sexual contact with women inmates at the Klamath County Jail. Darin Mullica, 28, and Joe Reister, 25, allegedly victimized three women between February and October, according to Klamath County District Attorney Ed Caleb. The men were charged with official misconduct and coercion and were each being held on $10,000 bail. Mullica and Reister no longer work for the sheriff's department, and Caleb said he will recommend they be stripped of their law enforcement certification. Teen-ager dies in Coos County Jail COQUILLE - A Coquille teen-ager died after losing consciousness at the Coos County Jail on Wednesday morning, becoming the second inmate to die at the jail in less than six months. Jesse Dean Estabrook, 18, was booked into the jail Wednesday morning on a charge of assault, according to the county sheriff's office. Deputies were keeping a close eye on the him because they suspected he had taken an unknown substance before being arrested, the Coos County Sheriff's office said in a statement. Man sentenced for making bomb threat EUGENE - A 48-year-old man who falsely reported that his nephew was planning to detonate a bomb on an Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage has been sentenced to 15 months in prison. Ricky Jay Triplett, of Sutherlin, called an operator on June 27, 2000, saying a bomb was aboard a commercial airplane, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Papagni, Jr. Police and the FBI disembarked all passengers and searched the plane when it arrived in Eugene. They determined the threat was false. Child killed by car on U.S. Highway 30 PORTLAND - A 14-year-old boy was struck by a car and killed Thursday night while crossing U.S. 30 after getting off a school bus. Witnesses said the school bus driver threw up her hands and collapsed on the steering wheel after seeing 14-year-old Ryan Calvert get hit about 4:20 p.m. She then called 9-1-1. Portland police were investigating the accident, and Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a Portland police spokesman, said Thursday night that police were getting conflicting information about the circumstances.
