ASHLAND WATERSHED Helicopter logging to begin Tuesday in Ashland watershed Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Jan. 4, 2016 at 8:41 PM By Local report Posted Jan. 4, 2016 at 8:41 PM » Social News A helicopter will begin lifting fallen logs out of the Ashland watershed on Tuesday, carrying them a short distance to where they can be hauled away by truck, Ashland Forest Resiliency Project managers announced Monday. Work on felling trees to thin thick three growth on 1,200 acres began in December in the Lamb Mine Area. Use of helicopters was delayed by weather conditions. Crews will be working through weekends until the project is completed. Due to safety concerns and to avoid delaying operations, area closures are in place and will be enforced with possible fines for those who are endangering themselves and work crews. The goal of the 10-year AFR Project is to reduce severe wildfire risk to protect water quality, older forests, wildlife, people, property and quality of life. The project is jointly managed by the U.S. Forest Service Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, Lomakatsi Restoration Project, city of Ashland and The Nature Conservancy. Residents can expect to hear noise from the helicopter and log trucks. The trucks will use Tolman Creek Road, Siskiyou Boulevard, Crowson Road and Highway 66 to get to and from Highway 5.
