Farr More Content Now Posted Apr. 24, 2015 at 8:29 AM » Social News You know something is a dying breed when you hear a teenager say, “What’s a record store?” To met, it almost hurts like a punch in the gut. How could we let it come to this? How is it that the digital age has taken over? Record Store Day was April 18, if there’s anyone left who cares. I know I do. I spent a good many days in them growing up. Record stores are fascinating on so many levels, from the album art, rare finds, fellow music connoisseurs and the ability to actually hold an album in your hands. Downloading a song is great for convenience, but the sound of a download does not even begin to compare with that of an actual record, tape or CD. There’s something about the physicality of a recording that adds to the richness. I don’t get the same gratification from a digital download. It’s missing something. I’ve been busy putting together my ultimate playlist on my iPod Classic. I still have a long way to go in my endeavor, which includes the downloading of all 4,500 CDs in my collection to my iTunes account. I’m not putting every song on it. There is not an iPod big enough to hold my entire collection, but I’m managing to download mainly the hits. So far my Ultimate Playlist includes 7,281 songs. Could you imagine how much all this would cost if I had to re-buy all of this music on iTunes? My collection cost me enough, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I can probably tell you the very moment I purchased each and every one of them. Record Store Day proves that I am not alone in my love for music and adding to my collection. Although mainstream chains like Tower Records, Camelot Music, Wherehouse Music, and Virgin Mega-Stores have dissolved, standalone stores have survived, thanks to people like me. I’m also quite thankful for Amazon.com . It still caters to music lovers like me by offering a good many new releases each week. I recently read that vinyl sales have risen greatly in Europe, causing a resurgence in actual album sales. In countries like Germany, digital downloads lag well behind CD and album sales. I have to wonder where exactly it is they purchase the stereo systems to play these albums, though. I refuse to go to Best Buy and ask, for fear I’d laughed out the store. You think that’s funny? A recent trip to Meijer proved rather insightful, as the young checkout clerk said to me, “We still sell these things?” I happened to be purchasing Willie Nelson’s “Ultimate Hits” collection and Johnny Cash’s “Number 1s.” He proceeded to ask me who they were. Really! I wasn’t about to begin to explain to a young punk with purple and pink hair and multiple face piercings about the Man in Black. I just nodded and said, “Have a good day, Sue!” David T.
