Running Sunday, April 26, through Saturday, May 2, Independent Media Week showcases independent media producers, students, local activists and community groups organized around the theme “A well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy.” Independent Media Week is a grassroots campaign to showcase local media producers, how groups are using independent media in their campaigns, and to expand and inspire more local media production. This year will feature films, workshops and a keynote event leading into EMCOM, the emerging media convention at Southern Oregon University In April 2005, the City of Ashland officially proclaimed its first Independent Media Week. Citizen media activists launched KSKQ, a local FM radio station, and brought Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now” to speak in Ashland. A local media producer will be honored with the “Hal Jamison Independent Media Award.” Jamison was a long-time Ashland resident and supporter of independent, community media. This award is dedicated in his honor and showcases a community member who is dedicating their time and energy to support independent media resources. The week will include a “Media Circus” in the Ashland Plaza, films at the Grange, Medford library and Southern Oregon University, workshops on how to produce media and a keynote event featuring Debra Van Poolen and Austin Powell at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at SOU’s Stevenson Union. Powell is a managing editor at the Daily Dot, an online newspaper that covers internet topics and aims to be the “hometown newspaper” of the Internet. Poolen’s artistic projects have focused on social, environmental, and foreign policy matters which the US mainstream media neglects or misrepresents. The week starts with a breakfast and open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday at KSKQ at 330 East Hersey St., Ashland. From noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, there will be a “Media Circus” on the Plaza. Performers and clowns will entertain while participating groups table about their actions and upcoming events. Organizing sponsors include KSKQ 89.5 FM Community Radio, UN Club of Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley TV, Rogue Valley Messenger, Rogue Valley Community Press, Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice, Chamber of Commons, Occupy Medford, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now and Citizens for Peace and Justice.
