From early corn ale to more modern developments, America’s love for beer has never waned. (Even during Prohibition.) See you at happy hour! 1612: America’s first commercial brewery opens in Manhattan, known then as New Amsterdam. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons) 1620: According to popular but disputed lore, due to dwindling beer supplies, the Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock. It's a nice story, anyway. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons) 1860: German soap-maker Eberhard Anheuser, purchases a struggling brewery in St. Louis. Later on, his son-in-law, Adolphus Busch, takes over, renaming it Anheuser-Busch. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons) 1919: The Volstead Act, named for Minnesota legislator Andrew Volstead, is enacted to carry out the intent of 18th Amendment, prohibiting the production, sale, and transport of "intoxicating liquors.” A year later, the 18th Amendment goes into effect.
