Proposals are due May 17 and the bid will be awarded May 27. The board approved the RFP written by the district’s ad-hoc facilities and bond committee during a special session of the board at the Ashland School District office Monday night. The board first reviewed the RFP on April 11, when it sent the document back to the facilities and bond committee to be tweaked. “Most of it is the same,” as the April 11 draft, Ashland Schools Superintendent Juli Di Chiro said. The school board added elements to the description of the long-range facilities plan to include review of safety and security, considerations of building codes, feasibility of historic preservation, a prioritization of needs and an evaluation of renovation versus new construction. The facilities and bond committee created a section asking for a study of the district’s potential future land needs after the school board eliminated a provision requesting an evaluation of the district’s future building needs. “It’s not with the intention of purchasing land, but so we have a base line for future study,” facilities and bond committee member Carol Davis said. The school district serves a land larger than the city’s urban growth boundary and district officials would like the study to consider areas outside of city limits that could see considerable growth in the next 50 years. Current demographic projections for the district estimate the population of school-age children through 2008. “We want to get it in play because it is the long-term plan. We at least want to get it on the table,” said Chuck Keil, the school board liaison to the facilities and bond committee. “We’re not saying [growth is] going to happen, but is there any potential?” In other business, the school board: • approved requests from Keil and board chair Amy Amrhein to represent the school district at two separate lobbying events in Salem this week. Amrhein will meet with the Oregon Democratic Caucus today to discuss ending fund balances of school districts, K-12 funding and a K-12 stability plan written by a Republican representative. Keil will travel with an Ashland of Chamber of Commerce delegation to meet with six legislators later this month; • discussed the board’s role in selecting a new school district business manager to replace the retiring Loren Luman. Di Chiro has interviewed several candidates and, contingent on completing a reference check, will visit in Tillamook in early May. The school board may meet with the candidate during in Ashland an executive session on May 6. Prior to the board meeting, the budget committee held its first meeting where it received copies of the 2005-06 budget document, selected Rick Barth to be chair and set dates for two additional meetings on May 4 and 18 at 7 p.m. in the school district office.
