My kids used to ask me often, “Mom shouldn’t we lock our bikes up?,” or “Mom should we lock the car doors?” My response was always, “No, it will be okay.” Well, I found myself eating my words the days after my car was stolen, as I bring our bikes inside and remind my kids to lock their doors. My kids questioned their safety, I questioned our safety. (See the story, “Single mom bemoans theft of car,” Feb. 23) But, I continued to stay positive. My daughter told me everyday, “Don’t worry mom, we will find our car.” As I returned the car a friend let me borrow for the first few days after the theft of our car, we were ready as could be to become a family on our bikes. I questioned how I would juggle the already fast pace of our life while moving at the speed of “as fast as my legs will peddle,” but I had no other choice. It was just going to have to be okay. I continued to question the goodness of people, seeing in a different light that bad things really do happen to good people, and I wondered when my children and I would ever stop feeling so hurt by the people who stole our car. Well, I learned the day that the article came out that good things also happen to good people. An angel came to our lives! I came home to a message on the answering machine saying that this woman wanted to give me her car! It has given me such a good feeling to know that this is the kind of community that has taken care of us in this time of need. I have received a beautiful blessing of kindness from a woman that I did not even know, but has such a big heart that she did not want for me or my children to be without. Theresa, how does it feel to be an angel? We will never forget your kindness and only hope that your goodness continues in the hearts of many others. As I received a call from Officer DeSilva on Friday telling me that my stolen car has been found in Mencinido City, Calif., nose-down, vertical position in a ravine on someone’s private land, my irritation grew. But then I feel again that there is a balance of goodness and evil, and I will continue to remain optimistic that goodness outweighs the bad and I will never forget that I was blessed to have received this goodness from a woman in my new community.
