Garrington pastels Margaret Garrington completed a number of pastel paintings while working on location during her artist residency at Crater Lake National Park in October, 2000. These plein-air works are featured at the Blue Heron Gallery, 90 N. Main St. Ashland, during the month of April. A variety of perfect weather conditions during most of her stay made it ideal for setting up her easel and painting outdoors throughout the park. In a painting completed on the southeast rim, sunlight catches along the edges of Sun Notch. This painting captures the grand scale of the rim walls rising above the lake while dwarfing the rock formation called Phantom Ship below. Away from the rim and at lower elevations are large stands of Aspen found along Annie Creek drainage. In the fall these trees turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange. The artist found the clear blue October sky juxtaposed against the stands of trees created a tableau of extreme beauty. She states, "As the wind slightly blew, the iridescent leaves shimmered and provided me moments of incredible pleasure at the day, my life, and painting in this remarkable place." During the artists' three-week stay at Crater Lake, she also used Kiser Studio to work in the early morning, late afternoon, and when the cold weather kept her inside. Set on the rim of the caldera, the studio provided stunningly characteristic views of the lake, and the leisure to study the everchanging panorama of sky, clouds, and lake. From this location the artist captured Llao Rock at sunset and a series of works called eight foot tree paintings: conifers with overloaded limbs bent at the tips with heavy new snow. In the fall, snow depths are judged by these trees, and when the tips of these trees reappear in late spring, summer can't be too far off. The public is invited to join the artist at the opening reception to be held from 5 to 8 pm during the First Friday Art Walk.
