P-T school board plans to appoint new member Ashland Daily Tidings PHOENIX - The Phoenix-Talent School District board is scheduled to appoint a new member at its meeting Thursday night. The board will select one of three applicants: Bob Kerlinger, Michael Meridith and Kris York, all residents of the district, according to Superintendent David Willard said. The appointment will fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Pete Lunde, who left the board in August for medical reasons. The board also plans to discuss an application for financial assistance from the Oregon School Board Legal Assistance Fund to help with a lawsuit filed by the family of Phoenix High School student Keanon Ferguson, Willard said. Ferguson was suspended and stripped of his title as student body president by district officials after being found with marijuana in a school parking lot. Ferguson's father sued the school district saying that the district had no right to remove him from office. Jackson County Judge Phil Arnold ruled earlier this month that the school district did not have authority to remove the student from office and ordered the district to reinstate Ferguson as student body president. The school district is appealing Arnold's ruling. The district hopes to get help paying for the appeal, Willard said. "If you have a lawsuit that the Oregon School Board Association feels has an impact on other school districts, you can apply for money to help you with fighting the litigation," he said.
