COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY SOU women to join No. 2-ranked men at NAIA Championships No. 16-ranked Raider women receive at-large bid By SOU Sports Information DailyTidings.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Nov. 10, 2014 @ 7:35 pm By SOU Sports Information Posted Nov. 10, 2014 @ 7:35 pm » Social News KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As expected, the Southern Oregon University women's cross country team received an at-large invitation to the NAIA Championships when the men's and women's fields were released Monday. The second-ranked SOU men, who on Saturday won their seventh consecutive Cascade Conference title, got in with the CCC's automatic berth. The NAIA Championships will be held at Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence, Kan., on Nov. 22, and both teams will bring seven individuals with one alternate. The Raider women were ranked 23rd going into the CCC Championships, and at that point were in line for the final at-large bid. With a second-place finish, they bettered their standing and moved past two other CCC teams to No. 16 in the final NAIA rankings that were released Sunday. Three other CCC schools will be among the 37 teams in the women's race: No. 3 Northwest Christian, No. 18 Oregon Tech and No. 22 College of Idaho. The final at-large spot went to No. 25 Texas Wesleyan. Last year there were 32 teams in both the men's and women's races, but the NAIA changed the format this year to allow for more teams and less individuals running without their teams present. There will be 84 individuals running without teams in the women's race, and 36 teams with 76 individuals in the men's. The SOU women sent three individuals to the 2013 NAIA Championships, including returners Summer Cano and Rebecca Lupescu, but hadn't advanced as a team since 2010. That had previously been the only year in SOU cross country history that both the men's and women's teams advanced. Since winning their first NAIA title in 2010, the Raider men finished third in 2011, second in 2012, and second again in 2013 with an individual championship from Eric Avila. They'll likely bring along four runners – Eric Ghelfi, Jared Hixon, Kevin Jorgensen and Cary Dunagan — who traveled to Rim Rock last year, and it's been a newcomer, Max Runia, who has led them in their last two races. Finishing as a pack, as the Raiders are wont to do, will give them their best chance to upset defending champion Oklahoma City, which has toted the No. 1 ranking all season. SOU's top-seven placers finished within 15 seconds of each other at the CCC Championships. Other CCC men's teams headed to Kansas are No. 9 Eastern Oregon, No. 17 Concordia, No. 21 College of Idaho and Oregon Tech. OIT was unranked in the final poll and received the final at-large.
