Many will feature music and dancing and general revelry, not to mention the bubbly. The Winchester Inn will celebrate New Year’s Eve with a special Grower Champagne party featuring three very rare Champagnes. The evening will feature a three-course buffet menu and music from the Ed Dunsavage Trio, featuring Chicken Hirsh on drums and Joe Cohoon on bass. The Inn is offering special rates on guest rooms and suites for the evening as well. Sufi heart circle Join the 12th annual global peace dance Ashland Sufi Heart Circle offers the 12th annual New Year’s Eve Global Peace Dance, a special evening of Sufi practices and Dances of universal peace. This event, in conjunction with Sufi dance circles growing and spreading worldwide, will focus on the theme of peace within and without, in the spirit of unity of all religions. We will unite simultaneously with dance circles in as many time zones as possible around the globe to welcome the New Year in Peace with song, dance, and prayer. All are welcome. No experience necessary. The dance will be Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Headwaters Bldg., 4th and C Streets, Ashland. For more information call 482-4902. Family dance Familes can dance at the Havurah Shir Hadash, which is hosting, for the first time, a family dance party to usher in the secular New Year on Saturday at 8 p.m. The event is geared towards grown-ups and children of all ages to celebrate together. Live music will be provided by Jerry Attrick and the Pacemakers, whose music is danceable and eclectic, appealing to audiences of all ages. The musical styles range from Klezmer to music of the 1960s and ‘70s and contemporary classic dance tunes of every style imaginable. Band leader Jerry Attrick, aka Dave Young, says “Our magic is in our mix and musicianship.” Ayala Zonnenschein, Havurah Program Director says “What a wonderful way to start off the year with a multi-generational event that promises to be pure fun. You just don’t hear mixes like this everyday. There’s something for everybody.” The band will play till after midnight and there will be light food and beverages for sale throughout the evening. Tickets are on sale now in the Havurah office located at 185 N. Mountain Ave. in Ashland. Prices are $10 per person or $25 per family (4 people), when purchased in advance, $13 per person or $30 per family at the door. Call 488-7716. Out-of-the-ordinary things to do offered For murder mystery lovers, “Ardent Spirit,” the new 1920s Agatha Christie-style murder mystery by the Gumshoe Gourmet, will play on New Year’s Eve at the Windmill Inn & Suites in Ashland. The evening includes three-course dinner, show, and dancing to the Rogue Suspects. “Local history is so rich, says Lyda Woods, Gumshoe’s artistic director and playwright. “For example, aviators perched their Curtiss Jenny’s on Table Rock, and wing-walked and barnstormed in open fields to the delight of locals. And the railroad brought the rich and the scandalous in search of rest and restoration through the local hot springs. We like to think the show is murderously funny, and many of our patrons have agreed.” The show is more than just a performance, Woods says. “The audience will have the opportunity to create paper airplanes, search a crime scene, learn an ancient Masai ritual, join a kazoo sing-a-long, decode a cipher, participate in a tableau, and investigate a heinous crime,” she said. The cast includes: Amy Lytle Bielby, Victoria Stewart, Samar Dawisha, Tim McReynolds, Shannon McReynolds, Robert Hight, Rebecca Konefal, Duncan Hightower, and Tammy Volk. Jennifer Schloming provides musical direction. All guests fill out ballots to guess the murderer(s). Tickets are $60. J.Wail at Vinyl Club For a completely different new year’s celebration, try the Vinyl Club, where J. Wail’s one-man spacefunk-conglomeration will play. The show starts at 9 p.m. and costs $4. J. Wail has been playing venues and dance floors all over the country on his marathon tour across the United States. Using live instruments and precise loops J. Wail blends funk, trance, and experimental groove in a mix of a pure feel good spontaneous combustion. Mambo Rico adds Salsa spice to New Year’s Eve bash ... New Year’s Eve the historical armory in Ashland will be pumping with the latest in hot music and dance. The Ashland-based salsa dance band Mambo Rico will host music and dance enthusiasts of all ages at the New Year’s Eve Fancy Dress Salsa Ball at the armory on Saturday with live salsa dance music offered well into the early hours of 2006. Don’t know how to Salsa yet? No fear, as the Salsa dance lesson will start at 9 p.m. Mambo Rico’s fan base has been growing to the point where the Armory, with its large capacity and dance floor, is one of only a few local venues large enough for this event, so that even with a large crowd, everyone will have room to kick up their heels. In February of 2001, several local Ashland musicians who were aficionados and students of Cuban music styles started getting together to study and play the music they loved. This project came to fruition as Mambo Rico, Ashland’s own salsa dance band. The music the group performs is built upon a foundation of piano, bass and percussion. Strong vocals and horns are vital elements also. Mambo Rico’s repertoire is built on the syncopated rhythms typified in Cuban Son. In this style of music, every instrument and voice is considered first to be a percussion instrument — each an integral part of the rhythmic fabric of the piece. From its inception, Mambo Rico has been a dance band. Its repertoire is chosen from the dancers’ perspective and audience members are compelled to get up on their feet — there is simply no other choice! The reason for the very existence of Mambo Rico is to provide dance music for the enjoyment of salsa dance enthusiasts. Dance is incorporated into the stage show, with an introductory salsa dance lesson provided as a warm-up to the show. For this special New Year’s event, it is requested that everyone wear their finest dresses, suits, jackets and ties. Tickets are $15 general admission at the door.
