I know and admire them both. Ashland is fortunate to have these intelligent and hardworking individuals in our city government. Both are analytic and experienced communicators whom I trust to act in good faith, not as advocates for any hidden agendas. I was taken aback by what seemed to be the Mayor’s polite scolding of Voisin in his Oct. 6 column. But accusing a councilor of disrespect is a serious charge. He cites an unnamed “somebody” saying that Carol’s comment “threw the council under the bus.” That reference to an overworked metaphor amounts to hearsay. Readers deserve more substance than that. Was the entire council offended? Is Carol Voisin being admonished to get in line? I commend the Tidings for allowing periodic communications from our city councilors. I hope none of them will feel intimidated from offering honest appraisals of their abilities to carry out their responsibilities in the future. I looked back at Voisin’s Sept. 22 column where she refers to an unnamed citizen’s comment in a public forum about having “the government we deserve.” I assume she agreed or otherwise would not have included it. Why does that need to be interpreted as derogatory or cynical? It could apply to good government as well. The comment included an exhortation for fellow citizens to engage their elected representatives so that decisions are not made in an insular manner. What’s wrong with that? I admit that I am often too busy or complacent to follow that advice and appreciate it when others do. I have opinions on several contentious issues presently facing the council. I omit them here because that is not the purpose of this letter. I’m sure it is a challenge for the council to filter and integrate the many diverse and passionate opinions put before them. Consensus would be nice, but lacking that, then it is their unenviable job to carefully deliberate and arrive at a compromise calculated to bring the most benefit to most if not all of us. Taking the stance that too much citizen input impedes the decision-making process will not serve that end.
