Police warn of phone scammers pretending to be police Comment By Local report DailyTidings.com By Local report Posted Mar. 31, 2016 at 5:55 PM By Local report Posted Mar. 31, 2016 at 5:55 PM » Social News The Jackson County Sheriff's Office is warning locals to beware of a phone scam that uses the names of actual police officers to convince people to pay fines. A man with a southern accent is reportedly claiming to be "Captain Sickler" or "Captain Holloway" with the sheriff's office, making false claims of missed court dates and required fines in order to coax potential victims. Caller ID gives the number of the scammer as 541-214-0735, although detectives at the sheriff's office don't believe the caller is local. Capt. Tim Snaith with the sheriff's office said that two incidents were reported Wednesday, but no victims have fallen for the scam. Similar scams using names of actual law enforcement personnel have targeted locals before, most recently impersonating staff at the sheriff's office in September 2015, and coming from 541-205-8422 out of Klamath Falls. In 2012, a caller posed using names of actual Medford police detectives to scam a victim out of nearly $6,000, according to archives. Those contacted by the scammer are advised to report it to Detective Ron Walch by calling 541-774-6800.
