'Parents and Children' exhibit at SOU's Center for the Visual Arts Southern Oregon University's Center for the Visual Arts will present an exhibit entitled "Parents and Children" featuring three local artists: Wataru Sugiyama, Flora Henningsen and Avram Novick during the month of January. The exhibit will open with a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8 in the Thorndike Gallery in the Art Building located on the corner of Indiana St. and Siskiyou Blvd. at the south end of the SOU campus in Ashland. Todd Barton, resident composer and music director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, will play music during the reception. 'Parents and Children,' designed by the artists, features artists Wataru Sugiyama, Flora Henningsen and Avram Novick to "�uplift the heart and spirit of viewers and bring a smile to their faces." Sugiyama is a local Japanese sculptor and professor, teaching at SOU and at local youth programs. His works are seen locally, throughout the U.S, and abroad: in Hawaii, England, Germany, Switzerland and Japan. Using animal sculptures, the show focuses on the expression of love between parents and children. Flora Henningsen is presenting Ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement, in conjunction with Sugiyama's sculptures. Henningsen is a local Ikebana master who teaches at the Rogue Gallery and Art Center and has also exhibited locally, throughout the U.S from Boca Raton, Fla. to San Francisco, and around the world from Japan to Belgium. Avram Novick will be adding Ikebana vases to the exhibit. Two sculptures donated by Sugiyama will be auctioned off during a silent auction that will take place throughout the show. The winners will be announced on January 30, with the profits benefiting Lincoln Elementary School. For more information about the exhibit, call 552-8315.
